Indication
Used for the treatment and prevention of calcium deficiency states including hypocalcaemia, tetany, and as an adjunct in conditions requiring supplemental calcium such as osteoporosis and rickets.
Ingredients
- Calcium gluconate (calcium content varies
- typically 90 mg elemental calcium per 10 ml ampoule)
Direction
As directed by a physician. For injectable forms, must only be administered by trained healthcare professionals. Oral calcium supplementation dosing varies by indication and patient age.
Side effects
- Nausea
- constipation (oral forms).
- Flushing
- warmth sensation (IV forms).
- Hypercalcaemia with prolonged high
- dose use.
- Local tissue necrosis if extravasation occurs with IV administration.
Precautions
- Intravenous administration must be performed by a healthcare professional only.
- Contraindicated in hypercalcaemia and hypercalciuria.
- Use with caution in patients with renal impairment or cardiac disease.
- Rapid intravenous injection may cause bradycardia or cardiac arrest.
- Monitor serum calcium levels during therapy.
- Do not mix with phosphate or carbonate solutions.
