Mucilin 5g

Indication

Treatment of constipation and management of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Also used as a bulk-forming laxative to regulate bowel habits.

Ingredients

• Ispaghula husk (psyllium) 3.5g per 5g sachet

Direction

Mix 1 sachet (5g) in a large glass of water or juice (at least 200ml). Stir well and drink immediately. Take 1–3 times daily. Drink plenty of additional fluids throughout the day.

Side effects

• Flatulence and bloating
• Abdominal cramps initially
• Rarely: allergic reactions including anaphylaxis (sensitised individuals)

Precautions

• Always take with adequate fluid to prevent oesophageal obstruction.
• Not for patients with bowel obstruction
• difficulty swallowing
• or acute abdominal conditions.
• May affect absorption of other medications — take 1 hour before or 2 hours after other medicines.
• Diabetic patients should monitor blood glucose.
