Indication
Treatment of constipation and management of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Also used as a bulk-forming laxative to regulate bowel habits.
Ingredients
- Ispaghula husk (psyllium) 3.5g per 5g sachet
Direction
Mix 1 sachet (5g) in a large glass of water or juice (at least 200ml). Stir well and drink immediately. Take 1β3 times daily. Drink plenty of additional fluids throughout the day.
Side effects
- Flatulence and bloating
- Abdominal cramps initially
- Rarely: allergic reactions including anaphylaxis (sensitised individuals)
Precautions
- Always take with adequate fluid to prevent oesophageal obstruction.
- Not for patients with bowel obstruction
- difficulty swallowing
- or acute abdominal conditions.
- May affect absorption of other medications β take 1 hour before or 2 hours after other medicines.
- Diabetic patients should monitor blood glucose.
