Indication
Prevention and treatment of hypokalaemia (low blood potassium) in patients on diuretics, corticosteroids, or with conditions leading to potassium loss.
Ingredients
- Potassium chloride 600mg (8 mmol potassium per tablet)
Direction
Swallow tablets whole with plenty of fluid (at least half a glass of water). Do not crush or chew. Take with or after food. Dose as directed by physician.
Side effects
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal discomfort
- Diarrhoea
- Rarely: gastrointestinal ulceration with immediate
- release forms
Precautions
- Contraindicated in hyperkalaemia and severe renal impairment.
- Monitor serum potassium levels regularly.
- Avoid concomitant use with potassium
- sparing diuretics or ACE inhibitors without monitoring.
- LP (slow
- release) formulation — must be swallowed whole to prevent local GI irritation.
