Indication
Doxycap contains doxycycline, a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted infections (chlamydia, gonorrhoea), acne vulgaris, malaria prophylaxis, Lyme disease, rickettsial infections, and infections caused by atypical organisms (Mycoplasma, Legionella).
Ingredients
- Doxycycline 100 mg
Direction
Adults: 100 mg twice daily on the first day, then 100 mg once daily (or 50 mg twice daily). For severe infections: 100 mg twice daily throughout treatment. Malaria prophylaxis: 100 mg once daily (start 1–2 days before travel, continue during travel and for 4 weeks after). Take capsules with a full glass of water, with food or milk to reduce GI irritation. Remain upright for at least 30 minutes after taking. Do not take within 2 hours of antacids, dairy products, iron, or calcium.
Side effects
- Nausea
- vomiting
- or stomach discomfort.
- Oesophagitis or oesophageal ulceration.
- Photosensitivity (increased sensitivity to sunlight).
- Diarrhoea.
- Skin rash.
- Dental discolouration in children under 8 years.
- Superinfection (oral or vaginal candidiasis) with prolonged use.
- Benign intracranial hypertension (rare).
Precautions
- Do not use in children under 8 years — causes permanent dental discolouration and bone growth effects.
- Avoid in pregnancy and during breastfeeding.
- Do not take simultaneously with antacids
- milk products
- or supplements containing calcium
- magnesium
- aluminium
- or iron — significantly reduces absorption.
- Avoid prolonged sun exposure and use sunscreen — may cause photosensitivity.
- Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment.
- Oesophageal ulceration may occur — take with adequate fluid and remain upright.
- Complete the full prescribed course to prevent antibiotic resistance.
- Keep out of reach of children.
