Cephalexin 500mg

Indication

Cephalexin 500 mg is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections (tonsillitis, pharyngitis, pneumonia), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone infections, and otitis media.

Ingredients

• Cephalexin 500 mg

Direction

Adults: 250–500 mg every 6 hours (four times daily), or 500 mg every 12 hours for mild-to-moderate infections. Severe infections: 500 mg every 6 hours. Children: 25–50 mg/kg/day in divided doses. Complete the full course of treatment.

Side effects

• Nausea
• vomiting.
• Diarrhoea.
• Abdominal discomfort.
• Skin rash.
• Allergic reactions (urticaria
• angioedema — rare).
• Pseudomembranous colitis (rare
• with prolonged use).
• Oral or vaginal candidiasis.

Precautions

• Do not use in patients with known allergy to cephalosporins
• cross
• reactivity with penicillins is possible — use with caution in penicillin
• allergic patients.
• Use with caution in patients with renal impairment
• dose adjustment may be necessary.
• Prolonged use may cause superinfection with resistant organisms.
• Complete the full prescribed course.
• Keep out of reach of children.
