Indication
ERYTHRO-MS 250 contains erythromycin, a macrolide antibiotic used for the treatment of bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis, whooping cough), skin and soft tissue infections, sexually transmitted infections (chlamydia, syphilis in penicillin-allergic patients), and as an alternative for patients allergic to penicillin.
Ingredients
- Erythromycin 250 mg
Direction
Adults: 250–500 mg four times daily (every 6 hours), or 500 mg–1 g twice daily, for 7–14 days. Take with food to reduce GI side effects. Children: 30–50 mg/kg/day in divided doses. Complete the full course.
Side effects
- Nausea and vomiting (most common — dose
- related).
- Abdominal cramps.
- Diarrhoea.
- Cholestatic hepatitis (with prolonged use).
- QT prolongation and arrhythmias (rare).
- Hearing loss (rare
- with high doses).
- Skin rash.
Precautions
- Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment — erythromycin is metabolised in the liver.
- May cause QT interval prolongation — caution with other QT
- prolonging medicines.
- Erythromycin is a potent inhibitor of CYP3A4 — significant drug interactions with many medicines (statins
- warfarin
- carbamazepine
- etc.).
- May cause cholestatic jaundice with prolonged use.
- Not recommended for use with ergot alkaloids.
- Keep out of reach of children.
