Indication
Omeprazole GPO 20 mg is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used for the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), erosive oesophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and as part of Helicobacter pylori eradication regimens.
Ingredients
- Omeprazole 20 mg
Direction
Adults: 20–40 mg once daily before a meal (morning preferred), for 4–8 weeks. H. pylori eradication: 20 mg twice daily for 7–14 days (in combination with antibiotics). Maintenance of GORD: 10–20 mg once daily. Swallow capsules/tablets whole — do not crush or chew.
Side effects
- Headache.
- Diarrhoea.
- Nausea.
- Abdominal pain.
- Flatulence.
- Constipation.
- Hypomagnesaemia with long
- term use.
- C. difficile diarrhoea (rare).
- Bone fractures with prolonged use (rare).
Precautions
- Long
- term use may reduce magnesium absorption — monitor serum magnesium in patients on prolonged therapy.
- Prolonged use may increase risk of Clostridium difficile diarrhoea.
- Long
- term use associated with increased risk of bone fractures and vitamin B12 deficiency.
- May mask symptoms of gastric malignancy — rule out cancer before initiating therapy.
- Use with caution in patients with severe hepatic impairment.
- Interactions with clopidogrel
- methotrexate
- warfarin — consult a pharmacist.
- Keep out of reach of children.
