ECOTHROCIN 500 Azithromycin 500mg

Indication

ECOTHROCIN 500 (Azithromycin 500 mg) is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat community-acquired pneumonia, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, sinusitis, skin and soft tissue infections, and sexually transmitted infections caused by susceptible organisms.

Ingredients

• Azithromycin 500 mg

Direction

Adults: 500 mg once daily for 3 days, or 500 mg on day 1 followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2–5 depending on indication. Take with or without food.

Side effects

• Diarrhoea
• nausea
• abdominal pain
• vomiting.
• Headache.
• QT prolongation and cardiac arrhythmias (rare).
• Elevated liver enzymes (rare hepatotoxicity).
• Rash
• hypersensitivity reactions.

Precautions

• Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics.
• Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment.
• May prolong QT interval
• avoid in patients with known QT prolongation
• hypokalaemia
• or taking other QT
• prolonging drugs.
• Drug interactions: antacids containing aluminium/magnesium reduce absorption — take at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after.
• Complete the full prescribed course.
• Keep out of reach of children.
