Indication
ECOTHROCIN 500 (Azithromycin 500 mg) is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat community-acquired pneumonia, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, sinusitis, skin and soft tissue infections, and sexually transmitted infections caused by susceptible organisms.
Ingredients
- Azithromycin 500 mg
Direction
Adults: 500 mg once daily for 3 days, or 500 mg on day 1 followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2–5 depending on indication. Take with or without food.
Side effects
- Diarrhoea
- nausea
- abdominal pain
- vomiting.
- Headache.
- QT prolongation and cardiac arrhythmias (rare).
- Elevated liver enzymes (rare hepatotoxicity).
- Rash
- hypersensitivity reactions.
Precautions
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics.
- Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment.
- May prolong QT interval
- avoid in patients with known QT prolongation
- hypokalaemia
- or taking other QT
- prolonging drugs.
- Drug interactions: antacids containing aluminium/magnesium reduce absorption — take at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after.
- Complete the full prescribed course.
- Keep out of reach of children.
