DEXA-MS 0.5mg

Indication

DEXA-MS (Dexamethasone 0.5 mg) is a corticosteroid used for a wide range of inflammatory and allergic conditions including asthma, allergic rhinitis, dermatitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and autoimmune disorders. Also used as an anti-emetic and in the management of cerebral oedema.

• Dexamethasone 0.5 mg

Direction

Adults: Dose varies widely by indication. Typical oral dose: 0.5–10 mg per day in divided doses. Follow prescriber instructions. Take with or after food to minimise gastric irritation.

Side effects

• Hyperglycaemia (raised blood sugar).
• Weight gain
• increased appetite
• fluid retention.
• Osteoporosis with long
• term use.
• Cushingoid features: moon face
• striae
• easy bruising.
• Mood changes
• insomnia
• psychosis (rare).
• Peptic ulceration
• especially with NSAIDs.
• Immunosuppression and increased infection risk.

Precautions

• Contraindicated in systemic fungal infections without concurrent antifungal treatment.
• Prolonged use causes adrenal suppression
• do not stop abruptly — taper dose gradually.
• Increases susceptibility to infections
• avoid contact with individuals with chickenpox or measles.
• May mask signs of infection.
• Use with caution in diabetes
• hypertension
• osteoporosis
• peptic ulcer
• and psychiatric disorders.
• Avoid live vaccines during therapy.
• Use lowest effective dose for shortest possible duration.
