Indication
DIABETMIN Retard 850 mg (Metformin HCl) is an oral biguanide antidiabetic agent used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, especially in overweight patients, when diet and exercise are insufficient. The 'Retard' (extended-release) formulation provides sustained release for improved tolerability.
Ingredients
- Metformin Hydrochloride 850 mg
Direction
Adults: Initial dose 500–850 mg once daily with the evening meal. Dose may be increased gradually to a maximum of 2000 mg per day. Take with food. Swallow whole — do not crush or chew extended-release tablets.
Side effects
- Nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhoea
- abdominal pain (especially initially
- usually transient).
- Metallic taste.
- Rare: lactic acidosis (serious).
- Long
- term: reduced vitamin B12 absorption.
Precautions
- Contraindicated in renal impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²).
- Contraindicated in hepatic impairment
- heart failure
- or respiratory failure.
- Withhold before and 48 hours after iodinated contrast media.
- Risk of lactic acidosis — discontinue immediately if suspected.
- Monitor renal function regularly.
- Avoid excessive alcohol consumption.
- Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
