Indication

Burnsil Silver Sulfadiazine Cream 1% is an antimicrobial cream used to prevent and treat wound infections in second and third-degree burns. It is also used in skin graft sites and other open wounds to prevent infection.

Ingredients

• Silver sulfadiazine 10 mg per gram (1%)
• 25 g tube

Direction

Apply a 3–5 mm thick layer of cream to the affected area once or twice daily using a sterile technique. The wound may be left open or covered with a light dressing. Continue until satisfactory healing has occurred or the wound is ready for grafting. Do not apply to the face.

Side effects

• Transient leukopenia (reduction in white blood cells).
• Skin discolouration (temporary brownish/grey staining).
• Burning sensation on application.
• Skin rash or itching.

Precautions

• Do not use if allergic to sulfonamides.
• Avoid use in premature infants or neonates under 2 months (risk of kernicterus).
• Use with caution in patients with glucose

• phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency.
• Not recommended in the third trimester of pregnancy.
• Monitor blood counts and renal/hepatic function with prolonged use over large areas.
• May accumulate systemically when applied over large surface areas.
• Keep out of reach of children.
