Indication

Caltoux (Carbocisteine) is a mucolytic agent used to facilitate expectoration by reducing the viscosity of bronchial secretions in respiratory conditions such as chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, and mucus-hypersecretion states.

Ingredients

• Carbocisteine 375 mg per 5 mL syrup (or as labelled)

Direction

Adults: 15 mL (750 mg) 3 times daily, reducing to 10 mL (500 mg) 3 times daily when improvement occurs. Children 2–5 years: 2.5 mL (125 mg) 4 times daily; 5–12 years: 5 mL (250 mg) 3 times daily. Use as directed by physician.

Side effects

• Gastrointestinal bleeding (rare
• with history of peptic ulcer).
• Rare: allergic reactions
• rash.

Precautions

• Not recommended in patients with active peptic ulcer.
• Use with caution in patients with a history of peptic ulceration.
• Safety in pregnancy not firmly established
• consult a physician.
• Keep out of reach of children.
