Promethazine 5mg/5ml

Indication

Promethazine is a first-generation antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms, nausea and vomiting, motion sickness, and as a sedative for pre-operative medication. It also has antiemetic properties.

Ingredients

• Promethazine hydrochloride 5 mg per 5 ml

Direction

Adults: 10–25 mg at bedtime or as directed. Children 2–12 years: 0.1 mg/kg per dose, up to a maximum of 12.5 mg per dose, 2–3 times daily as directed by a physician. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration.

• impaired coordination
• Dry mouth
• constipation
• blurred vision
• Urinary retention
• Extrapyramidal effects (rare)
• Paradoxical excitation in children

Precautions

• Contraindicated in children under 2 years of age due to risk of fatal respiratory depression.
• Use with caution in elderly patients.
• Avoid concurrent use with alcohol
• sedatives
• or CNS depressants.
• Do not use in patients with respiratory impairment
• asthma
• or sleep apnea.
• May cause drowsiness — avoid driving or operating machinery.
• Use with caution in patients with epilepsy
• liver impairment
• or cardiovascular disease.
• Avoid use in pregnancy
• especially near term.
