Duphalac 667mg/ml

Indication

Duphalac is an osmotic laxative used to treat constipation and to reduce blood ammonia levels in patients with hepatic encephalopathy (portal-systemic encephalopathy). Lactulose draws water into the bowel to soften stools and promote bowel movements.

Ingredients

• Lactulose 667 mg per ml (10 g per 15 ml dose)

Direction

Adults (constipation): 15–30 ml (10–20 g) once daily, adjustable to effect. Children 7–14 years: 15 ml per day; 1–6 years: 5–10 ml per day; under 1 year: 2.5 ml per day. For hepatic encephalopathy (adults): 30–45 ml 3 times daily adjusted to produce 2–3 soft stools per day. Take with water or juice.

Side effects

• Flatulence
• bloating
• abdominal cramps (especially initial days)
• Diarrhea with excessive doses
• Nausea
• vomiting (rare)

Precautions

• Contains galactose and lactose — contraindicated in patients with galactosaemia or lactose intolerance.
• Use with caution in diabetic patients (contains sugars).
• May cause flatulence and bloating
• especially in the first few days.
• Ensure adequate fluid intake during use.
• Not recommended for patients with intestinal obstruction.
• Keep out of reach of children.
