Precautions

• Contraindicated in women with a history of or current venous thromboembolism (deep vein thrombosis
• pulmonary embolism).
• Contraindicated in women with known or suspected breast cancer or oestrogen
• sensitive malignancies.
• Contraindicated in patients with arterial cardiovascular disease (e.g. stroke
• ischaemic heart disease) or significant risk factors.
• Contraindicated in women with liver disease with abnormal liver function
• or liver tumours.
• Contraindicated during pregnancy or if pregnancy is suspected.
• Contraindicated in undiagnosed abnormal uterine bleeding.
• Smokers (especially over 35 years) have an increased risk of serious cardiovascular side effects.
• Increases risk of arterial and venous thromboembolic events — discontinue if migraine with aura
• visual changes
• or chest pain develops.
• Blood pressure should be checked before and during use
• discontinue if hypertension develops.
• May interact with rifampicin
• anticonvulsants (phenytoin
• carbamazepine
• barbiturates
• topiramate)
• HIV medicines — reduced contraceptive efficacy.
• Consult a doctor if there is family history of thromboembolic disease or breast cancer.
