Indication
Cotrim Ephac is a broad-spectrum antibacterial combination used to treat urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections including acute bronchitis and pneumonia, acute otitis media, digestive infections including sigmoiditis, and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Also used for infections caused by Toxoplasma gondii.
Ingredients
- Sulfamethoxazole 400 mg
- Trimethoprim 80 mg
Direction
Adults: 2 tablets twice daily (morning and evening) during or after meals. Duration of treatment as directed by physician. Take with plenty of water.
Side effects
- Nausea
- vomiting
- loss of appetite
- Skin rash
- Stevens
- Johnson syndrome (rare but serious)
- Crystalluria — drink plenty of water
- Thrombocytopenia or leukopenia with prolonged use
- Photosensitivity
Precautions
- Do not use in patients with sulfonamide or trimethoprim hypersensitivity
- Contraindicated in severe renal or hepatic impairment
- Not recommended in the first trimester of pregnancy or during breastfeeding
- Drink at least 1.5 liters of water daily during treatment to prevent crystalluria
- Respect prescribed dosage — do not exceed recommended doses
- Keep out of reach of children
- Store away from light and humidity
