Indication

Antihistamine for allergies, nausea, vomiting, and sedation

Ingredients

• Promethazine 5mg

Direction

Adults: 10–25 mg (10–25 ml) orally every 4–6 hours as needed, not to exceed 100 mg per day. Children 2–5 years: 5 mg (5 ml) every 6–8 hours; do not exceed 15 mg per day. Children 6–12 years: 5–10 mg (5–10 ml) every 6 hours; do not exceed 25 mg per day. Take with food or milk to reduce stomach upset. Always use the provided measuring device.

Side effects

• Drowsiness and sedation (very common).
• Dizziness and impaired coordination.
• Dry mouth
• blurred vision
• urinary retention
• and constipation (anticholinergic effects).
• Extrapyramidal reactions (e.g. tremor
• dystonia) — more common in children.
• Paradoxical excitability or hyperactivity
• particularly in children.
• Photosensitivity reactions.
• Respiratory depression — particularly dangerous in children under 2 years.
• Rarely: jaundice
• blood dyscrasias.

Precautions

• Contraindicated in children under 2 years of age due to risk of fatal respiratory depression.
• Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to promethazine or other phenothiazines.
• Use with caution in patients with respiratory impairment
• sleep apnoea
• or asthma.
• May cause excessive sedation
• avoid driving or operating heavy machinery.
• Avoid concurrent use with alcohol
• sedatives
• hypnotics
• opioids
• or other CNS depressants.
• Use with caution in patients with epilepsy
• glaucoma
• urinary retention
• prostatic hypertrophy
• or hepatic impairment.
• Neuroleptic malignant syndrome has been reported rarely
• discontinue immediately if signs occur.
• Keep out of reach of children.
