Indication

Normal saline IV infusion for fluid and electrolyte replacement

Ingredients

• Sodium Chloride 0.9%

Direction

Intravenous infusion; administered by a healthcare professional. Adults: infuse 100 ml of 0.9% sodium chloride solution intravenously at a rate appropriate to the patient's clinical condition, typically over 30–60 minutes, unless otherwise specified by a physician. Rate and volume must be individualised based on patient age, weight, and clinical status.

Side effects

• Fluid overload if infused too rapidly or in excessive volumes — risk of oedema
• hypertension
• and cardiac failure.
• Hypernatraemia and hyperchloraemia with prolonged or excessive use.
• Hypokalaemia may develop with large
• volume infusions.
• Injection site reactions (phlebitis
• thrombosis).

Precautions

• For intravenous use only
• administered under medical supervision.
• Contraindicated in patients with hypernatraemia or hyperchloraemia.
• Use with caution in patients with congestive heart failure
• renal impairment
• or conditions associated with sodium retention.
• Monitor serum electrolytes during prolonged use
• hyperchloraemic metabolic acidosis may occur.
• Do not use if solution is cloudy
• discoloured
• or if the container is damaged.
• Single
• use only
• discard any unused portion.
• Keep out of reach of children.
