Indication

- Treatment of severe hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) - Source of carbohydrate calories in parenteral nutrition - Fluid replacement and caloric supply when oral intake is not possible

Ingredients

• Glucose (Dextrose) 50% (5 g/10 mL)

Direction

Administered by a healthcare professional as a slow intravenous injection or infusion; dose is individualized to the patient's clinical condition and blood glucose. Concentrated 50% solution is given into a large vein.

Side effects

• Local pain or irritation at the injection site
• Vein inflammation (thrombophlebitis)
• Hyperglycemia with rapid administration
• Electrolyte disturbances
• Fluid overload

Precautions

• Risk of tissue damage if concentrated solution extravasates—give into a large vein
• Monitor blood glucose and electrolytes
• especially in diabetes
• Use with caution in patients with fluid overload or heart/kidney impairment
• Rapid infusion may cause hyperglycemia and electrolyte disturbances
