Indication

Antibiotic for respiratory tract, skin, and soft tissue infections

Ingredients

• Azithromycin USP 250mg

Direction

Adults and children 12 years and over: usual dose is 500 mg on day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2–5 (total course 5 days). Alternatively, for some infections (e.g. community-acquired pneumonia, typhoid fever, or sexually transmitted infections), 500 mg once daily for 3 days may be prescribed. Take 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Swallow whole with water.

Side effects

• Gastrointestinal: nausea
• vomiting
• diarrhoea
• abdominal pain (most common).
• Headache
• dizziness.
• Hepatotoxicity (rare — elevated liver enzymes
• cholestatic jaundice).
• Prolonged QT interval and risk of serious cardiac arrhythmia (rare).
• Allergic reactions: rash
• urticaria
• rarely anaphylaxis or Stevens
• Johnson syndrome.
• Clostridioides difficile
• associated diarrhoea (with prolonged use).

Precautions

• Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to azithromycin
• erythromycin
• or other macrolide/ketolide antibiotics.
• Use with caution in patients with severe hepatic impairment — azithromycin is hepatically metabolised.
• May prolong the QT interval — use with caution in patients with known QT prolongation
• hypokalaemia
• hypomagnesaemia
• or those taking Class IA or III antiarrhythmics.
• May interact with antacids — separate doses by at least 2 hours.
• Use with caution with ergot alkaloids
• cyclosporine
• or digoxin (monitor levels).
• Antibiotics should be used only when prescribed — complete the full course.
• Keep out of reach of children.
