Indication
Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Ingredients
- Metformin hydrochloride
Direction
Oral use. As directed by physician.
Side effects
- Nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhoea (very common
- especially at initiation).
- Abdominal pain or discomfort.
- Loss of appetite.
- Metallic taste in mouth.
- Lactic acidosis (rare but potentially fatal).
- Vitamin B12 deficiency with prolonged use.
Precautions
- Contraindicated in patients with renal impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²).
- Contraindicated in patients with hepatic impairment.
- Contraindicated in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis.
- Withhold before and after use of iodinated contrast media (at least 48 hours).
- Risk of lactic acidosis (rare but serious)
- discontinue if signs of hypoxia
- dehydration
- or acute illness occur.
- May cause vitamin B12 deficiency with long
- term use
- periodic monitoring recommended.
- Use with caution in elderly patients.
- Alcohol increases the risk of lactic acidosis.
- Dose adjustment required in moderate renal impairment.
