Indication

Used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) in patients whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled by losartan or hydrochlorothiazide alone. The combination provides complementary mechanisms: losartan blocks the angiotensin II receptor and hydrochlorothiazide increases urinary excretion of sodium and water.

Ingredients

• Losartan Potassium
• Hydrochlorothiazide

Direction

Adults: One tablet (Losartan 50 mg / Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg) once daily. May be increased to Losartan 100 mg / Hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg once daily if needed. Take with or without food.

Side effects

• Common: dizziness
• upper respiratory tract infection
• hypokalaemia.
• Common: increased blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine.
• Uncommon: hypotension
• renal impairment
• hyperkalaemia.
• Rare: angioedema — seek immediate medical attention.
• Hydrochlorothiazide: photosensitivity reactions
• gout exacerbation.

Precautions

• Contraindicated in pregnancy — can cause fetal harm or death.
• Contraindicated in severe hepatic impairment
• anuria
• and hypersensitivity to losartan
• hydrochlorothiazide
• sulfonamides
• or any component.
• Do not use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes or renal impairment.
• Monitor electrolytes (potassium
• sodium)
• renal function
• and blood pressure.
• Risk of hypokalaemia with hydrochlorothiazide — monitor serum potassium.
• Risk of hyperkalaemia with losartan — avoid potassium supplements unless directed.
• May worsen gout
• monitor uric acid levels.
• Caution in patients with diabetes — hydrochlorothiazide may raise blood glucose.
• Keep out of reach of children.
