Indication
Used as a mucolytic agent to thin and loosen mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up. Indicated in respiratory conditions with excessive mucus production, including bronchitis, bronchiectasis, and cystic fibrosis. Also used as an antidote in paracetamol overdose.
Ingredients
- Acetylcysteine
Direction
Adults: 200 mg (one sachet/capsule) 3 times daily (600 mg total per day), or 600 mg once daily (effervescent). Dissolve powder or effervescent tablet in water before taking. Children 2–6 years: 100 mg 3 times daily. Children 6–14 years: 200 mg 2–3 times daily. Follow doctor's instructions.
Side effects
- Common: nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhoea
- abdominal pain.
- Uncommon: skin rash
- urticaria
- angioedema.
- Rare: bronchospasm (particularly in asthmatics).
- Very rare: severe hypersensitivity reactions (anaphylaxis).
- Rotten egg odour from opened sachets is normal.
Precautions
- Contraindicated if allergic to acetylcysteine.
- Use with caution in patients with bronchial asthma — may provoke bronchospasm
- bronchodilator should be available.
- Use with caution in patients with peptic ulcer disease.
- May interact with nitroglycerin (vasodilatory and antiplatelet effects).
- Use with caution in patients with phenylketonuria (some formulations contain aspartame).
- Keep out of reach of children.
