Indication

Alomagel is an antacid/antiflatulent used to relieve symptoms of hyperacidity, heartburn, acid indigestion, gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and flatulence. Aluminium and magnesium hydroxide neutralise excess stomach acid; simethicone relieves gas and bloating.

Ingredients

• Aluminium hydroxide 200 mg
• Magnesium hydroxide 200 mg
• Simethicone 25 mg (per 5 ml suspension — typical Alomagel / Il
• Yang antacid formulation)

Direction

Adults: 10–20 ml (2–4 teaspoonfuls) 3–4 times daily, 20–60 minutes after meals and at bedtime. Or as directed by a physician. Shake well before use. Chew tablets thoroughly before swallowing (if tablet form).

Side effects

• Constipation (aluminium effect) or diarrhoea (magnesium effect) — common.
• Nausea — uncommon.
• Hypophosphataemia with long
• term use — uncommon.
• Aluminium toxicity in patients with severe renal impairment (rare).

Precautions

• Prolonged use of aluminium
• containing antacids may cause low phosphate levels (hypophosphataemia) and aluminium accumulation in renal failure patients.
• Use with caution in patients with renal impairment — avoid aluminium and magnesium
• containing antacids in severe renal failure.
• May interfere with absorption of other medications — take other medicines at least 2 hours before or after antacid.
• Constipation may occur with aluminium
• containing antacids
• diarrhoea may occur with magnesium
• containing antacids.
• Keep out of reach of children.
