Indication

Cotrim P.P.M oral suspension is a sulphonamide-antibiotic combination used for the treatment of urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections (including Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia), otitis media, and certain gastrointestinal infections caused by susceptible organisms.

Ingredients
  • sulfamethoxazole
  • trimethoprim
Direction

Adults: 20 mL (800 mg sulfamethoxazole / 160 mg trimethoprim) every 12 hours for 5–14 days depending on infection. Children 6–12 years: 10 mL every 12 hours. Children 6 months–5 years: 5 mL every 12 hours. Adjust dose in renal impairment.

Side effects

  • anorexia
  • and diarrhoea.
  • Skin rashes and photosensitivity.
  • Haematological effects: thrombocytopenia
  • leucopenia (rare).
  • Stevens
  • Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis (rare but serious).
  • Elevated serum creatinine.
Precautions
  • Contraindicated in patients with severe sulphonamide hypersensitivity or known folate deficiency.
  • Not recommended in neonates under 6 weeks due to risk of kernicterus.
  • May cause severe skin reactions (Stevens
  • Johnson syndrome
  • toxic epidermal necrolysis) — discontinue immediately.
  • Monitor renal and hepatic function in prolonged use.
  • Maintain adequate fluid intake to prevent crystalluria.
  • Avoid in severe renal impairment (CrCl < 15 mL/min) without dose adjustment.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
