Indication
Carbophos activated charcoal is used as an adsorbent in the management of acute poisoning and drug overdose, and for symptomatic relief of diarrhoea, flatulence, and digestive discomfort due to gastrointestinal fermentation.
Ingredients
- Activated Vegetable Charcoal
Direction
Acute poisoning (adults): 1,200 mg (1 sachet/dose) as a single dose; may be repeated as directed by a physician. For digestive disorders (adults): 1,200 mg 1–3 times daily before meals. Take with a full glass of water. Children: use under medical supervision.
Side effects
- Black discolouration of stools.
- Constipation.
- Nausea or vomiting.
- Rare: aspiration if given to a patient with impaired consciousness.
Precautions
- Activated charcoal is not effective for poisoning by acids
- alkalis
- iron
- lithium
- cyanide
- or alcohol.
- Should not be used in patients with reduced gastrointestinal motility or obstruction.
- Can adsorb and reduce effectiveness of concomitant oral medications — allow at least 2 hours between charcoal and other medicines.
- May cause black stools (harmless).
- In poisoning situations
- use under medical supervision only.
- Keep out of reach of children.
