Indication
Used to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to diet and exercise. Also indicated to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, and to reduce the risk of hospitalization for heart failure.
Ingredients
- Empagliflozin
Direction
Adults: 10 mg once daily in the morning, with or without food. Dose may be increased to 25 mg once daily if additional glycemic control is needed and the drug is well tolerated. Take consistently at the same time each day.
Side effects
- Common: genital mycotic infections (thrush)
- urinary tract infections.
- Common: increased urination.
- Uncommon: volume depletion
- hypotension
- dizziness.
- Rare: diabetic ketoacidosis.
- Rare: Fournier's gangrene (necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum).
Precautions
- Not for use in type 1 diabetes or for treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis.
- Contraindicated in patients with eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73 m².
- Risk of diabetic ketoacidosis
- consider temporarily discontinuing before surgery or prolonged fasting.
- Risk of urinary tract and genital mycotic infections.
- Risk of volume depletion
- use caution in patients on diuretics or elderly patients.
- May cause lower limb amputation risk (monitor for signs of infection or sores).
- Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Keep out of reach of children.
