Indication
Used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to diet and exercise when diet alone is insufficient to control blood glucose.
Ingredients
- Glibenclamide
Direction
Adults: Initial dose of 2.5–5 mg once daily with breakfast or the first main meal. Dose may be increased by 2.5 mg increments at weekly intervals. Usual maintenance dose: 5–10 mg daily. Maximum dose: 15–20 mg daily. Take with food to reduce risk of hypoglycemia.
Side effects
- Common: hypoglycemia.
- Gastrointestinal: nausea
- fullness
- heartburn.
- Rare: blood disorders (agranulocytosis
- thrombocytopenia).
- Rare: cholestatic jaundice
- hepatitis.
- Rare: skin reactions (photosensitivity
- rash).
Precautions
- Contraindicated in type 1 diabetes
- diabetic ketoacidosis.
- Contraindicated in severe renal
- hepatic
- or adrenal insufficiency.
- Contraindicated in pregnancy.
- Risk of hypoglycemia
- particularly in the elderly
- debilitated
- or malnourished patients.
- Alcohol may potentiate hypoglycemic effect.
- Cross
- sensitivity possible with sulfonamides.
- Keep out of reach of children.
