Indication

Used for the treatment of chronic hyperuricemia in conditions where urate deposition has already occurred (including a history of or current gout tophus and/or gouty arthritis).

Ingredients
  • Febuxostat
Direction

Adults: 40 mg once daily. If serum uric acid remains above 6 mg/dL after 2–4 weeks, the dose may be increased to 80 mg once daily. Take with or without food.

Side effects
  • Common: gout flares (especially early in treatment)
  • liver enzyme elevations.
  • Common: nausea
  • rash.
  • Uncommon: dizziness
  • headache.
  • Rare: serious cardiovascular events
  • serious skin reactions (Stevens
  • Johnson syndrome).
Precautions
  • Contraindicated in patients currently receiving azathioprine
  • mercaptopurine
  • or theophylline.
  • Gout flares may occur when initiating treatment
  • prophylaxis with NSAIDs or colchicine is recommended.
  • Cardiovascular risk: cardiovascular mortality was higher with febuxostat than allopurinol in one trial
  • use with caution in patients with established cardiovascular disease.
  • Monitor liver function periodically.
  • Use with caution in severe renal or hepatic impairment.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
