Indication
Lasilix (Furosemide 40 mg) is a loop diuretic used to treat edema associated with congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis, and renal disease, including nephrotic syndrome. It is also used in the management of hypertension, alone or in combination with other antihypertensives.
Ingredients
- Furosemide
Direction
Adults: Initial dose 20–80 mg orally once daily in the morning. Dose may be titrated based on clinical response. For hypertension: 40 mg twice daily. Dosage must be individualized and adjusted by a physician. Take preferably in the morning to avoid nocturia.
Side effects
- Hypokalemia
- hyponatremia
- hypomagnesemia (electrolyte imbalances).
- Dehydration and hypotension.
- Increased blood glucose and uric acid levels.
- Dizziness
- lightheadedness.
- Nausea
- vomiting.
- Ototoxicity (rare
- more likely with high IV doses).
- Rare: allergic reactions
- interstitial nephritis.
Precautions
- Contraindicated in patients with anuria or severe renal failure.
- Monitor electrolytes (potassium
- sodium
- magnesium) and renal function regularly.
- Risk of hypokalemia
- supplement potassium or use with potassium
- sparing diuretics if needed.
- Use with caution in patients with diabetes mellitus
- may impair glucose tolerance.
- Use with caution in patients with gout (increases uric acid).
- May cause ototoxicity (hearing loss) especially with rapid IV injection or high doses.
- Caution in patients taking aminoglycosides
- NSAIDs
- or other nephrotoxic drugs.
- Keep out of reach of children.
