Indication

Methylprednisolone is a corticosteroid used to treat inflammatory and allergic conditions including arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, ulcerative colitis, allergic disorders, gland (endocrine) disorders, and conditions that affect the skin, eyes, lungs, stomach, nervous system, or blood cells.

Direction

Adults: 4–48 mg daily depending on the condition, taken orally. The dose is individualized by the prescribing physician. Take with food or milk to reduce stomach upset. Do not stop abruptly; taper dose under medical supervision.

Side effects

• Increased blood glucose levels.
• Weight gain and fluid retention.
• Insomnia

• Increased susceptibility to infections.
• Osteoporosis with long

• Adrenal suppression with prolonged use.

Precautions

• Do not use in patients with systemic fungal infections.
• Use with caution in patients with diabetes

• or peptic ulcer.
• Long
• term use may suppress adrenal function
• do not discontinue abruptly.
• May mask signs of infection
• monitor for new infections during therapy.
• Avoid live vaccines during treatment.
• Use with caution in patients with heart failure or renal impairment.
