Indication

Levofloxacin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat community-acquired pneumonia, acute bacterial sinusitis, urinary tract infections (including complicated UTIs and pyelonephritis), skin and soft tissue infections, and chronic bacterial prostatitis.

Ingredients

Direction

Adults: 500 mg once daily for 7–14 days depending on infection type and severity. Take orally with or without food. Swallow tablet whole with plenty of water. For complicated UTI/pyelonephritis, 250–500 mg once daily for 7–10 days.

Side effects

• Nausea
• diarrhea
• abdominal pain.
• Headache
• dizziness.
• Insomnia.
• Skin rash.
• Tendinitis or tendon rupture (rare but serious).
• QT prolongation (rare).
• Peripheral neuropathy (rare).
• Photosensitivity.

Precautions

• Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to fluoroquinolones.
• Avoid in patients with a history of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolone use.
• Risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture
• especially in patients over 60 years
• on corticosteroids
• or with organ transplants.
• May prolong QT interval
• use with caution in patients with cardiac conditions.
• May cause peripheral neuropathy — discontinue if symptoms occur.
• Avoid excessive sun exposure (photosensitivity).
• Use with caution in patients with epilepsy or CNS disorders.
• Adjust dose in renal impairment.
• Not recommended in children
• adolescents
• pregnant or breastfeeding women (unless no alternative).
