Indication
Nexium (Esomeprazole 40 mg) is a proton pump inhibitor used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and to prevent gastric ulcers associated with NSAID use. It works by irreversibly blocking the hydrogen-potassium ATPase enzyme in gastric parietal cells, reducing acid secretion.
Ingredients
- Esomeprazole
Direction
Adults: 40 mg once daily, taken at least 30–60 minutes before a meal. Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew. For GERD maintenance, 20 mg once daily may be used. Duration as directed by a physician.
Side effects
- Headache
- Nausea
- diarrhea
- abdominal pain
- flatulence
- constipation
- Dry mouth
- Dizziness
- Rash or itching (hypersensitivity reactions)
- Elevated liver enzymes (rare)
- Hypomagnesaemia with long
- term use (rare)
Precautions
- Do not use if allergic to esomeprazole or any other proton pump inhibitor (PPI).
- Long
- term use may increase risk of Clostridium difficile
- associated diarrhea.
- May reduce magnesium levels (hypomagnesaemia) with prolonged use
- monitor electrolytes.
- Use with caution in patients with severe hepatic impairment.
- May mask symptoms of gastric cancer
- rule out malignancy before starting therapy.
- May reduce absorption of drugs dependent on gastric pH (e.g.
- ketoconazole
- atazanavir
- iron salts).
- Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Keep out of reach of children.
