Indication

Racecadotril (acetorphan) is an antidiarrhoeal agent (enkephalinase inhibitor) that reduces intestinal hypersecretion. It is used for the treatment of acute secretory diarrhoea in adults and children, without causing constipation or slowing intestinal motility.

Direction

Adults: 100 mg three times daily before meals. Children: dose is weight-based (typically 1.5 mg/kg three times daily). Treatment should not exceed 7 days. Maintain adequate fluid and electrolyte replacement.

Side effects

• Headache.
• Skin rash or allergic reactions (rare).
• Constipation (uncommon).
• Nausea (rare).

Precautions

• Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to racecadotril.
• Use with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment.
• Not a substitute for oral rehydration therapy.
• Consult a physician if diarrhoea persists beyond 3 days or is accompanied by blood
• high fever
• or severe dehydration.
• Keep out of reach of children.
