Indication
Smecta is a gastrointestinal adsorbent and mucosal protective agent used for the symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhoea (including diarrhoea in infants and children), chronic diarrhoea associated with irritable bowel syndrome, and oesophagogastric pain associated with acid reflux.
Ingredients
- Diosmectite
Direction
Adults: 3 sachets (9 g) per day, diluted in water. Acute diarrhoea: take 2 sachets initially then 1 sachet after each loose stool. Children under 1 year: 1 sachet/day; 1–2 years: 1–2 sachets/day; over 2 years: 1–3 sachets/day. Take 30–60 minutes before meals.
Side effects
- Constipation (dose
- dependent).
- Mild bloating.
- Generally very well tolerated.
Precautions
- Take at least 2 hours apart from other medications
- as diosmectite may reduce their absorption.
- Ensure adequate oral hydration
- especially in infants and young children.
- Smecta does not replace oral rehydration therapy in acute diarrhoea.
- Contains sucrose and glucose — use with caution in diabetics.
- Keep out of reach of children.
