Promethazine 5 mg / 5 mL (0.1%)

Indication

Promethazine Hydrochloride syrup (5 mg/5 mL) is a first-generation antihistamine used for the treatment of allergic conditions (urticaria, hay fever), nausea and vomiting (including motion sickness), and as a sedative for pre-operative sedation.

Direction

Adults: 10–25 mg (10–25 mL) 2–3 times daily or as prescribed. Children 2–5 years: 5 mg once daily; Children 5–10 years: 5–10 mg once or twice daily. Use lowest effective dose. Follow prescriber instructions.

Side effects

• Common: sedation
• drowsiness
• dry mouth
• blurred vision.
• Uncommon: dizziness
• disorientation
• urinary retention.
• Rare: extrapyramidal reactions
• paradoxical CNS stimulation in children.

Precautions

• Contraindicated in children under 2 years due to risk of fatal respiratory depression.
• May cause severe drowsiness
• avoid driving or operating machinery.
• Avoid alcohol.
• Use with caution in patients with epilepsy
• respiratory impairment
• or urinary retention.
• Avoid in patients with narrow
• angle glaucoma or prostatic hypertrophy.
• Keep out of reach of children.
