Indication

Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina pectoris (chest pain). It works by relaxing blood vessels so the heart does not have to pump as hard, and by increasing blood supply to the heart.

Direction

Adults: The usual starting dose is 5 mg once daily. The dose may be increased to a maximum of 10 mg once daily depending on the patient's response. Take at the same time each day, with or without food.

Side effects

• Oedema (swelling of the ankles and feet) — most common
• Headache
• Flushing
• Dizziness or fatigue
• Palpitations
• Nausea or abdominal pain (less common)
• Skin rash (rare)

Precautions

• Do not use if allergic to amlodipine or other dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers.
• Use with caution in patients with severe hepatic impairment
• a lower starting dose may be needed.
• Use with caution in patients with severe hypotension or cardiogenic shock.
• May cause ankle oedema
• especially at higher doses.
• Avoid abrupt discontinuation in patients with angina.
• Use with caution in combination with other antihypertensives
• as additive blood
• pressure
• lowering effects may occur.
• Inform doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
