Indication
- Treatment of acute hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) - Source of carbohydrate calories and fluid - Treatment of insulin-induced hypoglycaemia - Used as a vehicle for dilution of certain medicines
Ingredients
- Glucose (Dextrose) 50% (500 mg/mL)
Direction
Administered by a healthcare professional by slow intravenous injection into a large vein; dose individualised to clinical need.
Side effects
- Vein irritation
- phlebitis or thrombosis at injection site
- Hyperglycaemia
- Tissue necrosis if extravasation occurs
- Fluid and electrolyte disturbances
Precautions
- Hypertonic solution
- inject into a large vein to avoid vein irritation and thrombosis
- Avoid extravasation
- which can cause tissue necrosis
- Use with caution in diabetes mellitus and monitor blood glucose
- Caution in fluid overload or impaired renal function
