Indication

- Treatment of acute hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) - Source of carbohydrate calories and fluid - Treatment of insulin-induced hypoglycaemia - Used as a vehicle for dilution of certain medicines

Ingredients

• Glucose (Dextrose) 50% (500 mg/mL)

Direction

Administered by a healthcare professional by slow intravenous injection into a large vein; dose individualised to clinical need.

Side effects

• Vein irritation
• phlebitis or thrombosis at injection site
• Hyperglycaemia
• Tissue necrosis if extravasation occurs
• Fluid and electrolyte disturbances

Precautions

• Hypertonic solution
• inject into a large vein to avoid vein irritation and thrombosis
• Avoid extravasation
• which can cause tissue necrosis
• Use with caution in diabetes mellitus and monitor blood glucose
• Caution in fluid overload or impaired renal function
