Indication
Treatment of constipation and hepatic encephalopathy.
Ingredients
- Lactulose 670 mg/ml
- Sodium Benzoate (preservative) 0.1%
Direction
Adults (constipation): 15–30 ml daily as single dose or 2 divided doses; maintenance 10–15 ml daily. Children 6–12 years: 20 ml daily. Children 1–5 years: 10 ml daily. Children under 1 year: 5 ml daily. Hepatic encephalopathy: 30–50 ml three times daily, adjusted to produce 2–3 soft stools daily.
Side effects
- Flatulence and intestinal cramps
- especially during the first few days of treatment. Nausea
- vomiting
- and diarrhea may occur at high doses. Electrolyte imbalance may occur with prolonged high
- dose use.
Precautions
- Lactulose contains galactose and lactose—use with caution in diabetics and patients with lactose intolerance (<1.2 g/15 ml). Use in pregnancy and lactation: potential benefits should be weighed against potential risks
- it is not known whether this drug is excreted in human milk. Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use
- stop if irritation or allergic reaction occurs.
