Getformin 2 mg / 500 mg

Indication

A fixed-dose combination of glimepiride (a sulfonylurea) and metformin (a biguanide) used to control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus when diet, exercise and a single agent do not give adequate control.

Ingredients

• Glimepiride USP 2 mg
• Metformin hydrochloride USP 500 mg

Direction

Take by mouth with meals as directed by the physician, usually once or twice daily. The dose is individualised to blood glucose response; take with food to reduce stomach upset and the risk of low blood sugar. Do not exceed the prescribed dose.

Side effects

• Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)
• shakiness
• sweating
• hunger
• dizziness
• Nausea
• diarrhoea
• abdominal discomfort or metallic taste
• Weight change
• Rarely
• lactic acidosis (with metformin) or vitamin B12 deficiency on long
• term use
• Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use and stop if irritation or allergy occurs

Precautions

• Carry a source of sugar in case of hypoglycaemia
• do not skip meals
• Avoid excessive alcohol
• which increases the risk of low blood sugar and lactic acidosis
• Not for use in severe kidney or liver impairment
• or in conditions causing low oxygen

• Monitor blood glucose and kidney function regularly during treatment
