Indication
Short-term relief of constipation. Bisacodyl is a stimulant laxative that acts directly on the wall of the large intestine to promote bowel movement. It is also used to clear the bowel before surgery, radiological examination or endoscopy.
Ingredients
- Bisacodyl 5 mg
Direction
Adults and children over 10 years: 1 to 2 coated tablets (5 to 10 mg) once daily, taken at bedtime. Swallow the tablets whole with water; do not chew, crush or split them. Do not take within one hour of milk or antacids. A bowel movement is usually produced 6 to 12 hours after the dose.
Side effects
- Abdominal cramps or abdominal discomfort
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea
- Dizziness or fainting in some people
- Prolonged or excessive use may cause fluid and electrolyte loss and laxative dependence
- If symptoms persist or worsen
- consult a doctor or pharmacist
Precautions
- Do not use in intestinal obstruction
- acute abdominal conditions such as appendicitis
- acute inflammatory bowel disease
- or severe dehydration
- Do not use in children under 10 years without medical advice
- Do not swallow with milk or antacids
- and do not chew the tablets
- as this may cause stomach irritation
- Do not use for more than 7 consecutive days unless directed by a doctor
- Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use if you are pregnant
- breastfeeding
- or taking other medicines
