Indication
A third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, including infections of the lower respiratory tract, skin and soft tissue, urinary tract, bones and joints, abdomen, meningitis, gonorrhoea and septicaemia, and for surgical prophylaxis. Given by intramuscular or intravenous injection by a healthcare professional. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
Ingredients
- Ceftriaxone sodium equivalent to ceftriaxone 1 g per vial
Direction
For intramuscular or intravenous injection, administered by a healthcare professional. Reconstitute the powder with the appropriate solvent before use. Dosage is as directed by the physician, based on the infection, its severity and the patient's age and weight. Complete the full course even if you feel better. Side effects
- May cause pain or swelling at the injection site
- diarrhoea
- nausea
- rash
- and changes in blood counts or liver enzymes. Serious allergic reactions
- severe persistent diarrhoea (Clostridioides difficile infection) and gallbladder sludge can occur. Consult a doctor or pharmacist if you experience any unexpected reaction.
Precautions
- Prescription only. Do not use if you are allergic to ceftriaxone
- other cephalosporins or penicillins. Must not be given to newborns with jaundice
- or at the same time as calcium
- containing intravenous solutions in newborns. Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease
- gallstones
- or a history of severe diarrhoea after antibiotics
- and if you are pregnant or breast
- feeding. Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use.
