Indication

Prescription treatment and perioperative prevention of serious infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria.

Ingredients

• Metronidazole 500 mg per 100 mL (5 mg/mL)

Direction

For intravenous infusion by a healthcare professional only. The dose, interval and treatment duration depend on infection, age, weight, organ function and local protocol.

Side effects

• Nausea
• vomiting
• abdominal discomfort
• headache or a metallic taste may occur.
• Serious neurologic effects
• blood disorders or hypersensitivity are uncommon but require prompt review.

Precautions

• Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least three days afterward because a severe reaction may occur.
• Review interactions
• especially warfarin
• lithium and disulfiram
• use carefully in liver disease or neurologic disorders.
