CEPHALEXIN 500 mg

Indication

CEPHALEXIN contains cefalexin (cephalexin), a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is indicated for treatment of bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, otitis media, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and bone infections.

Ingredients

• Cefalexin 500 mg

Direction

Adults: 250–500 mg every 6 hours, or 500 mg–1 g twice daily for 7–14 days. Children: 25–50 mg/kg/day in divided doses. Take with or without food.

Side effects

• Nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort.
• Diarrhoea.
• Skin rash.
• Allergic reactions.
• Elevated liver enzymes (rare).

Precautions

• Use with caution in patients with penicillin allergy (cross
• reactivity possible
• though rare).
• Use with caution in patients with renal impairment (dose reduction may be required).
• Risk of Clostridium difficile
• associated diarrhoea.
• May interact with probenecid (increased cefalexin levels).
• Complete the full course of treatment.
