Indication

Metrogyl Suspension (metronidazole) is an antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent used in children for the treatment of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and protozoa including amoebiasis, giardiasis, and anaerobic bacterial infections.

Ingredients

• Metronidazole 200 mg per 5 ml

Direction

Children (by weight and indication): For amoebiasis: 35–50 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses for 5–10 days. For giardiasis: 15 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses for 5 days. Shake well before use. Take with or after food.

Side effects

• Nausea
• vomiting
• abdominal pain.
• Metallic taste in mouth.
• Headache
• dizziness.
• Dark or reddish
• brown urine.
• Peripheral neuropathy with prolonged high
• dose use (rare).

Precautions

• Avoid alcohol during and 48 hours after treatment (disulfiram
• like reaction).
• Use with caution in hepatic impairment
• dose reduction may be required.
• May cause neurological effects with prolonged use
• monitor patients.
• Not recommended in the first trimester of pregnancy.
• Complete the full prescribed course.
