Glucophage 850 mg

Indication

Glucophage (metformin) is a biguanide antidiabetic agent used for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults and children over 10 years. It reduces hepatic glucose production and improves insulin sensitivity.

Ingredients

• Metformin Hydrochloride 850 mg (film
• coated tablet)

Direction

Adults: initially 500 mg or 850 mg once or twice daily with meals; increase gradually. Usual maintenance: 1500–2000 mg/day in 2–3 divided doses; maximum 3000 mg/day. Take with or immediately after food to reduce GI side effects.

Side effects

• Nausea
• vomiting
• diarrhea
• and abdominal discomfort (common
• especially at initiation

• Metallic taste.
• Lactic acidosis (rare but serious).
• Vitamin B12 deficiency with prolonged use.
• Hypoglycaemia does not occur with metformin alone.

Precautions

• Do not use in patients with severe renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min)
• hepatic impairment
• or conditions causing hypoxia (heart failure
• respiratory failure).
• Hold metformin 48 hours before and after contrast media procedures.
• Do not use in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis.
• Alcohol increases the risk of lactic acidosis.
• Monitor renal function regularly.
• Keep out of reach of children.
