Indication
Constipation: regulation of the colonic physiological rhythm. When soft stool is considered of medical benefit (haemorrhoids, after colonic/anal surgery). Hepatic encephalopathy (HE): treatment and prevention of hepatic coma or precoma.
Ingredients
- Lactulose 667 mg/ml (667 g per 1000 ml)
Direction
For oral administration. Constipation or where soft stool is of medical benefit — adults and adolescents: starting dose 15–45 ml daily, maintenance 15–30 ml daily; children 7–14 years: 15 ml starting, 10–15 ml maintenance; children 1–6 years: 5–10 ml daily; infants under 1 year: up to 5 ml daily. For hepatic encephalopathy, use only as directed by a doctor.
Side effects
- Flatulence and abdominal cramps may occur at the start of treatment
- they are usually transient
- Diarrhoea
- nausea
- vomiting and abdominal pain
- High doses may cause diarrhoea
- dehydration and electrolyte imbalance (low potassium)
- Consult a doctor or pharmacist if side effects persist
- stop use and seek advice if an allergic reaction occurs
Precautions
- Do not use if allergic to lactulose
- in galactosaemia
- or in gastrointestinal obstruction
- perforation or risk of perforation
- Contains small amounts of related sugars (lactose
- galactose
- epilactose)
- consult a doctor if you have sugar intolerance or diabetes
- Do not use for more than two weeks without medical supervision
- Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use in pregnancy
- breastfeeding or for infants
