Indication
Proton pump inhibitor that reduces stomach acid, used for gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (heartburn, acid regurgitation) and reflux oesophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, eradication of Helicobacter pylori in combination with antibiotics, and prevention of NSAID-associated ulcers.
Ingredients
- Omeprazole 20 mg (as enteric
- coated granules)
Direction
Oral route, as directed by the physician. Usual adult dose: 20 mg (1 capsule) once daily before breakfast, for 2 to 8 weeks depending on the condition; the doctor may increase to 40 mg daily. The capsule should be swallowed whole and not opened, chewed or crushed.
Side effects
- Headache
- Abdominal pain
- diarrhoea
- constipation
- nausea
- vomiting or flatulence
- Dizziness or rash
- Long
- term use may reduce vitamin B12 and magnesium levels and increase the risk of bone fractures
- Rarely
- severe allergic or skin reactions
- stop the medicine and seek medical help
Precautions
- Prescription medicine: use as directed by a physician
- Do not use if allergic to omeprazole
- other proton pump inhibitors or any ingredient
- Do not take with nelfinavir
- tell your doctor about other medicines such as clopidogrel
- warfarin or methotrexate
- Seek medical advice before use if you have unexplained weight loss
- difficulty swallowing
- vomiting blood or black stools
- Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use if pregnant or breastfeeding
