Indication
Anti-diarrhoeal for the symptomatic relief of acute non-specific diarrhoea and of chronic diarrhoea associated with inflammatory bowel disease; also used to reduce the volume of discharge from ileostomies.
Ingredients
- Loperamide hydrochloride 2 mg
Direction
For oral use. Adults, acute diarrhoea: 2 capsules (4 mg) initially, then 1 capsule (2 mg) after each loose stool; usual dose 6–8 mg per day, not more than 16 mg (8 capsules) per day. Stop if no improvement within 48 hours and see a doctor. Children 6 years and older only as directed by a doctor. Refer to the package insert for full dosage.
Side effects
- Constipation
- abdominal cramps or bloating
- Nausea or flatulence
- Dizziness or headache
- Dry mouth
- Rarely
- intestinal blockage (paralytic ileus) or serious allergic reactions such as rash or swelling
- stop use and seek medical help
Precautions
- Not recommended for children under 6 years of age
- Do not use if allergic to loperamide or any ingredient
- Do not use with high fever or bloody stools (acute dysentery)
- acute ulcerative colitis
- antibiotic
- associated (pseudomembranous) colitis
- or when constipation or bowel blockage must be avoided
- Stop use and see a doctor if constipation
- abdominal swelling or bloating occurs
- or if diarrhoea does not improve within 48 hours
- Replace lost fluids and salts during diarrhoea
- use with caution in liver impairment
- Do not exceed the recommended dose (overdose may cause serious heart problems)
- Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use if pregnant or breastfeeding
- keep out of reach of children
