Indication
Antiviral for the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections of the skin and mucous membranes (including initial and recurrent genital herpes), suppression and prevention of recurrent herpes simplex, prophylaxis in immunocompromised patients, and treatment of varicella (chickenpox) and herpes zoster (shingles).
Ingredients
- Acyclovir USP 400 mg
Direction
Oral route, as directed by the physician. Usual adult doses: herpes simplex in immunocompromised patients 400 mg 5 times daily for 5 days; suppression of recurrent herpes simplex 400 mg twice daily; prophylaxis in immunocompromised patients 200-400 mg 4 times daily; chickenpox 800 mg 4 times daily for 5 days; shingles 800 mg 5 times daily for 7 days. Reduce dose in severe renal impairment. Drink plenty of fluids.
Side effects
- Nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhoea or abdominal pain
- Headache
- dizziness or fatigue
- Skin rash
- itching or photosensitivity
- Rarely
- raised kidney function values
- confusion or hallucinations (especially in elderly or renally impaired patients)
- Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use and stop if irritation or allergy occurs
Precautions
- Do not use if allergic to acyclovir or valacyclovir
- Reduce the dose and use with caution in renal impairment and in the elderly
- Maintain adequate hydration during treatment
- Start treatment as early as possible after symptoms appear
- Use in pregnancy or breastfeeding only if advised by a doctor
- Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use and stop if irritation or allergy occurs
